CMS Issues Billing Reminder for Stem Cell Transplants

September 2018 ~

CMS has posted a reminder to physicians regarding correcting billing for stem cell transplants following an Office of the Inspector General (OIG) report which found that a large number of providers billed incorrectly for inpatient and outpatient services.

According to CMS, the February 2016 report from the OIG determined that Medicare paid for many stem cell transplants incorrectly due to providers billing these procedures as inpatient when they should have been submitted as outpatient services.

CMS is offering the following resources to help providers ensure correct billing and avoid overpayment recoveries: Medicare Did Not Pay Selected Inpatient Claims for Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant; Procedures in Accordance with Medicare Requirements OIG ReportOIG Report: Stem Cell Transplantation MLN Matters® Article, and CMS Transmittal 1805.
