FL – New Law Expands Prescribing Authority to Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners

January 2017 ~

Effective January 1, physician assistants and nurse practitioners practicing in Florida will be allowed to prescribe medications without physician oversight.

The law was signed last year by Governor Rick Scott to help mitigate physician shortages in the state. Florida was the last state to approve expanded prescribing powers for nurse practitioners.  Currently, Kentucky is the only state that has not expanded prescribing powers for physicians assistants
