CARC and RARC Updates Announced

June 2017 ~

CMS has announced updates to its Claims Adjustment Reason Code (CARC) and Remittance Advice Remark Code (RARC) policy which will become effective as of October 1, 2017.

The newly revised set of codes, announced in Change Request (CR) 100040, are located in remittance advice and coordination of benefits transactions. These codes provide either supplemental explanation for a monetary adjustment or policy information that generally applies to the monetary adjustment.

Additional updates based on the Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange (CORE) 360 Uniform Use of CARCs, RARCs and Claim Adjustment Group Code Rule publication are reflected in the CORE Code Combination List for June 2017.

CR 100040 also instructs ViPS Medicare System (VMS) and Fiscal Intermediary Shared System (FISS) maintainers to update Medicare Remit Easy Print (MREP) and PC Print.

Physicians, providers, billing and revenue cycle staff, and suppliers submitting claims to Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) for services provided to Medicare beneficiaries are advised to take note of these changes and practices using PC Print or Medicare Remit Easy Print software should obtain an updated version.
