CMS Releases the Medicare PQRS Experience Report for 2009

May 12, 2011 – In April,CMS released the PQRS and eRx data for 2009. The report “summarizes the experience of eligible professionals (EPS) who participated in PQRS in 2009, as well as trends in the program over time, including early results from the 2010 program year.” Here are some of their statistics:Â
- The PQRS and eRx Incentive Programs combined paid out $383,290,399 in 2009.
- Incentive payments were two times the total payments in 2008
- Participation in the PQRS program has grown at about 50% every year since the program began in 2007 with $36 million paid in its first year.
- Results show that there are growing rates in how often health care professionals report that they are complying with evidence-based care practices.
PQRS Program
- More than 210,000 EPs participated in the PQRS program
- Of those participating, 119,804 EPs in 12,647 practices satisfactorily reported data on quality measures and received incentive payments totaling more than $234 million.
- On average, $1,956 was paid per EP and $18,525 per practice
- Incentive payments were two times the total payments in 2008
eRx (eprescribing program)
- More than 92,000 EPs participated in the eRx program
- Of those participating,CMSpaid $148 million to 48,354 EPs
- The average bonus was just over $3,000 per EP and $14,501 per practice.
- This was the first year for eRx payments
